REEF MONITORING TRAIN THE TRAINERS

In October 2004, we held a pilot training weekend to introduce concepts of reef and resource mapping & monitoring to a group of 12 volunteer teachers.

We began to explore ways that the community could be involved with recognising health indicators on reefs, mangroves and sea grass beds, how they could map their natural resource areas and keep track of how they were taking care of them.

After the tsunami on 26 December 2004, we helped with immediate needs of the community as they had lost stock and sustained damage to homes, boats and nets. Communities made preparations for rehabilitation of mangroves, reefs and sea grass beds that offer natural protection from storm and sea damage.
