In 1999, in partnership with Marina Cole of Save Koh Tao Reefs, we piloted Share The Sea for 8-12 year old schoolchildren, arranging reef education and field trips.
This proved to be such a success that the same format was used, with some amendments, for a group of 16-17 year old students studying tourism at the Phuket Vocational College. We even enticed some previously non-swimming teachers to don mask and snorkel and join an experienced dive instructor to snorkel over the reefs of Racha Island to see for themselves…
The lesson plan for this activity is available here:
In 2002, we formed a partnership with a Thai NGO, Responsible Ecological & Social Tours (REST) to combine their community empowerment project in Koh Yao Noi with ours. Share The Sea developed into teaching English as a foreign language using the natural world of tropical coastal ecosystems and sustainable practices as subject matter.
