The Reef-World Foundation has worked with local people to conserve coral reefs in SE Asia for over 10 years on a variety of projects but the question is why? Coral reefs and other marine ecosystems are critical in supporting us and maintaining our quality of life.

71% of our planet is covered by the ocean and the rest is where we live. This small portion of land relies heavily on the seas and oceans that surround them for jobs, food and also determines our climate. The seas are natural buffers in helping regulate global temperatures and help with combating climate change through carbon absorption. Most people are not aware that 70 - 80% of the oxygen we breathe in the air comes from the sea!

Reef-World focuses mainly on coral reefs, one of many ecosystems, as this is a highly productive area that many people heavily rely on. It is estimated that one billion people worldwide have some dependence on coral reefs for food and income. However, coral reefs are under threat. Threats include destructive fishing practices and overfishing, irresponsible tourism practices, pollution and sedimentation, coral mining and climate change. People from developing countries are highly dependent on reefs for their livelihoods and are the most vulnerable to the impacts of loss of reef health.

Services from coral reefs in terms of food and tourism are invaluable and the financial return runs into the millions US$. Without them, many people would be forced into a lower quality of life. Coral reefs are also home to many unique species, some of which hold the key to powerful new medicines. We rely on coral reefs all around the world for certain pharmaceutical and cosmetics ingredients as well as imported fish all of which rely on the delicate food webs of tropical coral reefs.
